अमावस्या क्या है? | What is Amavasya?
अमावस्या हिन्दू पंचांग का वह दिन है जब आकाश में चन्द्रमा दिखाई नहीं देता। संस्कृत में “अमा” का अर्थ है चन्द्रमा और “वास्या” का अर्थ है “निवास न करना” — अर्थात् जिस दिन चन्द्रमा आकाश में निवास न करे। यह प्रत्येक माह एक बार आती है और कृष्ण पक्ष की अंतिम तिथि होती है।
Amavasya — the No Moon Day — marks the end of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu lunar calendar. The Sanskrit word literally means “dwelling together,” as the Sun and Moon occupy the same celestial longitude. It is considered one of the most spiritually potent tithis of the month.

Observed with a vow of silence (Maun Vrat), fasting, and holy river baths. Devotees gather at sacred rivers like the Ganga for purification rituals. Especially auspicious at Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar.
Chaitra Amavasya — 19 March 2026
The annual fair at Jambholav (Jambha Dhama) near Phalodi is held on this day — one of the holiest pilgrimages for the Bishnoi community. Guru Jambheshwar himself had a sacred pond dug here, known as Jambha Talaw.
Adhika Amavasya — 15 June 2026
A rare occurrence due to the extra lunar month (Adhik Maas) in 2026. This makes it exceptionally auspicious for spiritual merit, fasting, and charitable deeds. 2026 is a spiritually unique year because of this rare event.
Mahalaya Amavasya — 10 October 2026
The most important day of Pitru Paksha. The veil between the earthly world and Pitru Loka (realm of ancestors) is believed to be thinnest on this day. Special Shradh, Pind Daan, and Pitru Tarpan rituals are performed.
Kartika Amavasya / Diwali + Somvati — 9 November 2026
This Amavasya falls on a Monday, making it Somvati Amavasya — a rare and doubly auspicious combination. It is also celebrated as Diwali, the festival of lights. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped for wealth and prosperity.
अमावस्या के अनुष्ठान | Amavasya Rituals in Bishnoi Tradition
1. ब्रह्ममुहूर्त स्नान | Early Morning Bath
Devotees wake up in Brahma Muhurta (before sunrise) and take a purifying bath — in a sacred river if possible, or with clean water at home. This cleanses the body and prepares the mind for the day’s spiritual practices.
2. व्रत / उपवास | Fasting (Vrat)
As commanded in Guru Jambheshwar’s 29 niyamas, Bishnoi community members observe a fast on every Amavasya. Satvik food (fruits, water) may be consumed; grains are usually avoided. Fasting is believed to purify the body and seek divine blessings.
3. हवन / यज्ञ | Sacred Fire Ritual (Havan)
A collective Havan (fire oblation) is performed for the welfare of all living beings and for the liberation of departed souls. Mantras are chanted and offerings made to the sacred fire. This is a core niyama of the Bishnoi faith.
4. पितृ तर्पण | Pitru Tarpan
Water mixed with sesame seeds (til) is offered to the souls of ancestors with sacred mantras — Om Pitrubhyo Namah — to bring them peace and seek their blessings for family prosperity and harmony.
5. विष्णु स्मरण | Vishnu Naam Jaap
As per Bishnoi tradition, devotees worship and recite the name of Lord Vishnu (Hari Naam Jaap) throughout the day. This is a core niyama of Guru Jambheshwar’s 29 teachings — to always remember and adore Lord Vishnu.
6. दीपदान / दान | Lamp Lighting and Charity
As evening falls, diyas (lamps) are lit in homes and temples. Donating food, clothing, or essentials to the needy on Amavasya is considered highly meritorious. Good deeds performed on this day are believed to multiply in spiritual merit.
गुरु जम्भेश्वर के 29 नियम और प्रकृति संरक्षण | Guru Jambheshwar’s 29 Niyamas
बिश्नोई पंथ की स्थापना श्री गुरु जम्भेश्वर (1451–1536) ने सन् 1485 में समराथल धोरा में की थी। उन्होंने 29 नियम दिए जिनमें प्रकृति, पशु-पक्षी एवं पर्यावरण की रक्षा का विशेष स्थान है। अमावस्या व्रत इन्हीं 29 नियमों में से एक है।
The Bishnoi — India’s original eco-warriors — follow 29 principles (niyamas) encompassing environmental conservation, animal welfare, personal hygiene, and devotion to God. Among these: do not cut green trees, do not kill animals, protect all living beings, and observe a fast on every Amavasya.
In 1730, 363 Bishnois sacrificed their lives to protect Khejri trees at Khejarli village near Jodhpur — one of history’s first known environmental movements, led by the brave Amrita Devi Bishnoi.

लालासर (Lalasar), बीकानेर
जहाँ गुरु जम्भोजी ने अंतिम साँस ली। समाज के सामूहिक सहयोग से यहाँ हाल ही में एक भव्य मंदिर का निर्माण किया गया है।
खेजड़ली (Khejarli), जोधपुर
1730 के बलिदान की पवित्र भूमि जहाँ 363 बिश्नोइयों ने हरे पेड़ बचाने के लिए अपना जीवन बलिदान किया। यह विश्व का पहला ज्ञात पर्यावरण आंदोलन था।
